How to Get a Medical Marijuana Card in Florida

The Florida medical marijuana card process consists of several steps.

Step 1: Schedule an Appointment With a Qualified Physician

The first step is to meet with a Florida physician who is qualified to order medical marijuana.

A qualified physician must have an active, unrestricted Florida physician or osteopathic physician license and meet the additional state requirements for ordering medical marijuana.

Step 2: Complete Your Medical Evaluation

During your appointment, the physician will review your medical history and current condition.

The physician determines whether you have a qualifying condition and whether medical marijuana is appropriate under Florida law.

Step 3: Physician Enters You Into the Registry

If the physician determines that you qualify, your information and medical marijuana order are entered into Florida's Medical Marijuana Use Registry (MMUR).

This registration is required before you can obtain your state-issued Medical Marijuana Use Registry Identification Card.

Step 4: Apply for Your Florida Medical Marijuana Card

After you are entered into the Registry, you apply for your Medical Marijuana Use Registry Identification Card.

Florida allows patients to apply online or by mail. The current state application fee is $75.

Step 5: Purchase Medical Marijuana From a Licensed Dispensary

Once your card application has been approved, you can purchase medical marijuana products through a licensed Medical Marijuana Treatment Center (MMTC).

Florida patients may also use MMTC delivery services where available.

Florida Medical Marijuana Card Program

To participate in Florida's medical marijuana program, a patient must have a qualifying medical condition, be evaluated and certified by a qualified Florida medical marijuana physician, be entered into the Medical Marijuana Use Registry, and obtain an active Medical Marijuana Use Registry Identification Card.

What Is the Florida Medical Marijuana Program?

Florida's medical marijuana program allows qualified patients to receive medical marijuana recommendations/orders from a qualified physician and purchase approved medical marijuana products from licensed Medical Marijuana Treatment Centers (MMTCs).

The program is overseen by the Florida Department of Health's Office of Medical Marijuana Use. Once a qualified physician enters a patient's information and order into the Medical Marijuana Use Registry, the patient can apply for a state Medical Marijuana Use Registry Identification Card. After approval, the patient can fill authorized orders at a licensed MMTC or through an approved delivery service.

Florida's program is available to both permanent and seasonal Florida residents who meet the state's requirements.

Who Can Qualify for a Florida Medical Marijuana Card?

To qualify for Florida's medical marijuana program, you generally must:

  • Be a permanent or seasonal Florida resident
  • Have a qualifying medical condition
  • Be evaluated by a qualified Florida medical marijuana physician
  • Receive physician certification
  • Be entered into the Medical Marijuana Use Registry
  • Apply for and receive an active Medical Marijuana Use Registry Identification Card

Your physician is responsible for evaluating your medical history and determining whether medical marijuana is appropriate for your condition.

Being diagnosed with a qualifying condition does not automatically guarantee certification. The physician must determine that you meet the requirements under Florida law.

What Medical Conditions Qualify for Medical Marijuana in Florida?

Florida law identifies several qualifying conditions for medical marijuana. Current qualifying conditions include:

  • Cancer
  • Epilepsy
  • Glaucoma
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Crohn's disease
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
  • A medical condition of the same kind or class as one of the listed conditions
  • A terminal condition diagnosed by a physician other than the qualified physician issuing the certification
  • Chronic nonmalignant pain caused by, or that originates from, a qualifying medical condition and persists beyond the usual course of that condition

Florida's law also allows a qualified physician to determine that a patient has a medical condition comparable to a listed qualifying condition.

All Natural MD Florida has medical marijuana clinics in the following areas to better serve you in obtaining your medical cannabis card.

Can a Minor Get a Florida Medical Marijuana Card?

Florida law allows qualifying patients under 18 to participate in the medical marijuana program under specific requirements.

A patient under 18 generally requires a caregiver to purchase or administer medical marijuana. Florida also requires additional physician involvement for patients younger than 18 or patients with terminal conditions.

Parents and legal guardians should review the state's requirements and speak with a qualified physician before beginning the application process.

What Is a Medical Marijuana Caregiver?

A caregiver is a person authorized to assist a qualified patient with the purchase and/or administration of medical marijuana.

Florida caregivers must meet specific state requirements. Generally, a caregiver must be a Florida resident, be at least 21 years old, register with the Medical Marijuana Use Registry, and obtain a caregiver identification card. Additional requirements, including background screening and caregiver certification, may apply.

Patients under 18 must have a caregiver who can purchase or administer medical marijuana on their behalf.

Florida Medical Marijuana Card Renewal

Keeping your Florida medical marijuana authorization active requires paying attention to both your physician certification and your state identification card.

Florida's MMUR identification card must be renewed annually, and patients need an active physician certification in the Registry to continue participating in the program.

Patients should not wait until the last minute to begin the renewal process. OMMU recommends submitting a renewal application 45 days before the card expires.

Important Changes to Florida's Medical Marijuana Program

Florida's medical marijuana program continues to evolve as new legislation and administrative requirements take effect.

One important recent change comes from legislation enacted in 2025. Under the updated law, OMMU must revoke a patient's or caregiver's Registry registration in certain circumstances involving convictions or guilty/nolo contendere pleas for specified serious controlled-substance offenses, including trafficking, sale, manufacture, delivery, or possession with intent to sell, manufacture, or deliver a controlled substance under Chapter 893. The provision applies to qualifying cases disposed of on or after July 1, 2025.

If you have a criminal history and are concerned about how it may affect your eligibility, speak with a qualified attorney and review the current Florida requirements.

Is Medical Marijuana Legal in Florida?

Yes. Florida has a state-regulated medical marijuana program that allows qualified patients to obtain medical marijuana through the state's Medical Marijuana Use Registry and licensed MMTCs.

However, medical marijuana remains illegal under federal law.

Patients should also understand that having a Florida medical marijuana card does not authorize activities that are prohibited under Florida law or the rules governing the medical marijuana program.

Florida Medical Marijuana Card vs. Recreational Marijuana

Florida's medical marijuana program is intended for patients who meet the state's medical eligibility requirements.

A Florida Medical Cannabis Card does not mean that recreational marijuana is generally legal in the state. Patients must be properly certified, registered, and authorized under Florida's medical marijuana laws.

Medical marijuana should only be obtained and used in accordance with Florida law and the patient's physician orders.
